Rock My Soul, a highly acclaimed, 25-member secular choir that specializes in lively, roots-based gospel, and its “sister group” The RMS Five, a 5-member vocal ensemble that specializes in rich harmonies and unique arrangements of roots, Americana, and gospel, will perform three Rockin’ Holiday Concerts in Maine and NH. The shows will take place at the following locations: Second Christian Congregational Church in Kittery, ME on Friday, December 9 at 7:30 pm; at One Longfellow Square in Portland, ME on Sunday, December 11 at 4 pm; and at St. John’s Methodist Church in Dover, NH on Sunday, December 18 at 5 pm. CDs (including “Christmas Everyday” by The RMS Five) will be available for sale, along with refreshments and other merchandise.
Every year, The RMS Five and Rock My Soul put on high-quality holiday concerts throughout New England. “We’re influenced by gospel, blues, doo wop, and R&B,” says Dawn Boyer, founder and director of the two groups. “Those influences make their way into our harmonies and our arrangements, and of course we put our own stamp on them as well. No one else that we know of does quite what we do. We have a great time, and our audiences love the style of our music. It’s uplifting, and people walk out feeling much better than when they came in. Familes now make it an annual tradition to come to our shows.”
Songs will range from “gospelized” versions of familiar tunes such as “White Christmas” and an Aretha Franklin-inspired arrangement of “Joy to the World,” to the less familiar but no less inspiring “Behold That Star” and the Louis Armstrong-influenced “’Zat You, Santa Claus?” In contrast to the high-energy sound are introspective carols such as a Temptations-inspired arrangement of “Silent Night,” as well as new songs added to the repertoire such as “Merry Christmas, Baby” and “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow.” Other audience favorites, such as “O Holy Night” and an R&B, raise-the-rafters version of “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus” will be included.
“This year’s show will have new songs in the repertoire that we’re excited about,” says Boyer. “And our horn section will be back to help us pull out all the stops.”
Featured soloists for the evening will include Dan Allard, Dawn Boyer, Jody Dugrenier, Chris George, Alex Krauth, Terry Olson, and Tina Weinberger. The Rock My Soul band, including Mike Effenberger on keyboards, Brett Hartenbach and Bob Halperin on guitar, Victor Love on bass, Joe Rogers on drums, and special guests Zach Lange on trumpet and Matt Langley on saxophone, will accompany the group.
Due to the groups’ popularity—shows often sell out--advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Advance tickets for the concert are $15 general admission / $10 seniors 65+ (senior tickets available for the Dec. 9 and 18 shows only). All tickets at the door are $20. Kids 12 and under are free for the Dec. 9 and 18 shows. Advance tickets and/or CDs may be purchased online at www.projectmusicworks.org, or by calling 207-450-8016 for the Dec. 9 show at Second Christian Congregational in Kittery, ME, and the Dec. 18 show at St. John’s Methodist Church in Dover, NH, or by calling 207-761-1757 for the Dec. 11 show at One Longfellow Square in Portland, ME.
Rock My Soul and The RMS Five are part of ProjectMusicWorks, a nonprofit arts and cultural organization dedicated to performing free outreach concerts at hospice, homeless shelters, nursing homes, rehab programs, and other facilities that support those in need. By performing the songs and educating audiences about the history behind them, ProjectMusicWorks hopes to lift hearts, open minds, and bring people closer together to understand the meaning of peace, equality, respect, unity, and justice.
